My Favorite Records, 2011

I think a lot of us former music writers never really stop being music writers, sometimes I miss being able to recommend a bunch of albums every December for folks to check out (I do not miss CDs showing up in the mail however, and all those terrible people that work for media promotion companies e-mailing me relentlessly, ugh). So in the tradition of my former occupation, here’s my 20 or so favorite records released in 2012 (in no particular order)…

 James Blake – James Blake

Ethereal, dreamy ambient synth pop with soulful and choppy vocals; I saw this called “post-dubstep” and couldn’t quite figure that out, it’s basically electro R&B.

 La Dispute – Wildlife

Screamy, emotional hardcore punk-fucking-rock from some kids up in Michigan, has an angst and despair that echoes the zeitgeist.

The Twilight Singers – Dynamite Steps

Awesome 90’s-esque alt rock; Greg Dulli of Afghan Whigs’ newer project- man, this guy can play the lothario perfectly.

 Kendrick Lamar – Section.80

Best hip-hop I’ve heard in years. Really. Sort of the African-American counterpart to La Dispute’s record- if they’re the disaffected, screwed up white kids, here’s Kendrick’s take on what the black kids are feeling.

 Tim Hecker Ravedeath, 1972

One of the best ambient releases of recent years; broken, disheveled and messy- but strangely soothing and comforting.

Matana Roberts – Coin Coin Chapter One: Gens de colouer libres

Avant-garde free-jazz from the folks at Constellation Records, literally they’re all on here! Godspeed You! Black Emperor, et. al. It’s a concept record, too- basically drawing from Roberts’ ancestry and the effects of the slave trade and how it’s still felt today.

A Lazarus Soul – Through a Window in the Sunshine Room

Dreamy, minimal synth pop. These sad Dubliners really hit the mark perfectly, kind of like all that 80s Manchester stuff updated and re-recorded.

A Winged Victory for the Sullen – s/t

Stars of the Lid’s Adam Wiltzie’s new side project; it’s quite beautiful. Ambient with touches of Modern classical piano.

 Destroyer – Kaputt

Really ebullient glammy pop bordering on disco, with a sophistication unlike those aforementioned musics.

Ketil Bjørnstad / Svante Henryson – Night Song

Really nice piano jazz; unexpectedly awesome- plays great in the small hours of the night.

 Honorable Mentions

Hezekiah Jones – Have You Seen Our New Fort?

Raphael Cutrufello’s sound matures into a fully-realized and hefty indie folk magnum opus.

Nicolas Jaar –Space is Only Noise

Minimal microhouse with French movie dialogue; infinitely interesting.

The Psychic Paramount – II

Messy, cathartic noise rock that viscerally attacks the senses.

The Kooks – Junk of the Heart

Wow, biggest surprise of the year, actually.

Six Organs of Admittance – Asleep on the Floodplain

Ben Chasny’s continued dominance in the field of psych-folk-drone on his like, what? 10th album? Jeez, Ben- slow down!

Gil Scott-Heron & Jamie xx – We’re New Here

Intelligent beats and music cradles Gil Scott-Heron’s legendary urban growl.

The Field – Looping State of Mind

So trippy it’s making my head spin. Drony-minimal-techy loops.

Lykke Li – Wounded Rhymes

One of the best “pure” pop releases this year, just weird enough to hold my attention all the way through.

Fleet Foxes – Helplessness Blues

Really pretty instrumentation, sparkling melodies and lush harmonies. Gorgeous.

Cass McCombs – Wit’s End

This guy sneezes and great albums come out…

Please support these bands/artists by buying their records, and please support your small, local independent record shop this holiday season.

Buy vinyl if you can.

Rest days are no fun…

Taking today off, ran 13.6 yesterday. At least I think it was 13.6- my iPhone actually completely ran out of juice at 13.4- first time I’ve ever run and my legs had more battery power than my device. It was a 2:02 run, and with all the apps I had open no wonder it drained itself dry. That’s a 2+ year old phone for ya.

Here’s the training log for the past week:

Sunday the 11th: rest

Monday the 12th: rest (2 days in a row!)

Tues the 13th: 5.8 miles

Weds 14th: 9.12 miles

Thurs 15th: 7.89 miles

Fri 16th: rest

Sat 17th: 7.64 miles (at Redwood Regional, the uphills killed me!)

Sun 18th: 13.4 miles (+.2ish)

Total for week: 44.05 miles

Also, the Runmeter app is crap. I will never use you again, you are a waste of $4.99.

Also, I signed up for the Rodeo Beach Trail run on New Years’ Eve. I’ll be running the 20k race. That’s only 12.4 miles for you folks keeping score at home, but a gnarly 2,400+ feet of elevation change, two major climbs (and a sweet 8+ km downhill to end it, thx bro). I’ll be ramping up the training this week before going into a chill-ass taper week before the race.

Word.

Full moon run #2 (12-10-11)

Got myself a headlamp, got a running partner and hit the Redwoods late Saturday night and did some really fun trail running in the last full moon of 2011.

Started at the aptly named Moon Gate on Skyline, dropped down to the Stream Trail (via Tres Sendas trail), trucked a few miles down Stream to Chown, then climbed a good 500+ feet to West Ridge and back to Moon Gate. Took my friend Cameron who’s been getting more into running- I had initially said I wanted to do 12 miles and he was like no way but was like “if we do 6 on a trail with some drops/climbs, it’ll be more like 8 or so…”

Here’s the mileage thingy:

We ran super slow, stopped a lot to check the map and trail markers, just kind of ambled up some of the more severe inclines. I’d say conservatively we wasted a good 15 mins just sort of farting around with non-running. All-in-all, it was a fun time.

This full moon run is gonna be a monthly thing, my friend Andrew wants in on it now.

Last night’s run

That’s really all there is to say right now.

Where you been?

I’ve been running! I guess I need to recap my last week since I posted.

Sunday – 10.55 miles…

…at Redwood Regional, with about 2400 feet of elevation change (damn Runmeter GPS app only accounted for 6.86 miles and like 1900 feet of elevation changes- I seriously need an app that friggin’ works consistently). Anyway, this run was super fun, and it was the first 10+ I did since I got hurt. Adding all that elevation change into the mix, it’s like I ran 15+. My calves were not happy, but the rest of me was. It was cold and I didn’t listen to music’, ‘twas just me and the birds.

Monday – rest day

Tuesday – 5.24 miles…

…all flat. Ran down Telegraph into Berkeley, right on Russell back to College, College all the way to Shafter, Shafter to 41st and back home.

Wednesday – 6.24 miles…

…same as Tuesday, except I ran all the way to Haste (near Amoeba Records) to see all the fire damage from that big blaze last week. Telly is still all blocked off I guess. Listened to the new Phish release; it’s on Spotify, and it’s that ‘97 funky stuff (if you know what I mean).

Thursday – 6.71 miles…

This was my first time around the lake in a while, ran up 41st to Piedmont, over that hill on Linda down to Grand, down Grand to the movie theater, make left, right onto Lakeshore and circumnavigate the lake. I’m fighting a head cold so my sense of smell is off, I’m happy to report the lake wasn’t all stank funky.

There’s my week so far. Gonna run tonight after work and also tomorrow night (full moon run!)

Get hype.

Yeahhhhhh!

Felt pretty good today, only my fourth day back running since being sidelined with that weird back injury.

Did Redwood Regional from the Skyline staging area, starting on East Ridge Trail to Phillips Loop to Eucalyptus, down to Stream, up Canyon (!) and back on East Ridge.

I’m happy about this run, and look forward to some serious trail LSD* tomorrow. Looking like I’m in for about 10 to 12. Psyched.

* – yeah, that’s Long Slow Distance for those not in the know.

First Day back (yesterday)…

Yeah, sorry no update yesterday- I actually got a run in, first one in 13 days. Some mild aching on my lower left side, sort of feels like it’s in my hip now, but nothing too serious. Just annoying and naggy.

Just gonna limit myself to 12 miles this week (I should only do about 25% of my last full week’s mileage) so that’s 4 runs every other day at 3 miles per. Ugh.

Came out at an easy 8:45 for the 1st mile, but was like, “oh I better slow down…” (I wanted to stay closer to 9 or 9:30) and then ran an easier 9:53 for the second and finished “strong” with a 9:07 for the 3rd mile.

I figured a minute to a minute-and-a-half below my average training pace would be fine. Oh, and I stretched like crazy before AND after. I was reading that a lot of lower back problems are actually caused by either tight hamstrings or some hip flexor issue. Either way, I’m not effing around with my back any more.

Got another chiro visit Thursday evening. So far, so good…

Two More Days… (crossed fingers)

Went to the chiropractor again today.

She says I’m close to 90%, she’s giving me the okay to resume running- provided I am pain-free and have 100% full range of motion. So I’m crossing my fingers that it will only be 2 more days on the shelf over here.

It’s killing me, but I’ve heard awful horror stories of peeps coming back too soon from little injuries and getting slammed with something major.

Today would be the 9th consecutive day I haven’t ran, the longest such stretch since last December. Listen to your body, folks.

Massages and regular chiro visits from now on. Possibly a different stretching regimen, maybe another day a week I add yoga? I don’t know, all I wanna do is get out and run.

Baby steps…
